Design and outdoor rating
SwitchBot has announced Permanent Outdoor Lights, a 30m lighting system the company said is intended to stay installed year-round on eaves, porches, balconies, garage entrances, pergolas, patios and backyard walkways. The light strings carry an IP67 dust- and water-resistance rating, while the controller and power adapter are rated IP65, and a UV-resistant enclosure is used. SwitchBot gives an operating range of -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to 60°C) and a rated LED lifespan of up to 55,000 hours. The system ships as six 5m segments, and included extension cables support runs of up to 36m. It can be fixed with 3M adhesive tape or screws.
Light output and colour
The 30m installation holds 72 LEDs, with integrated IC control allowing several colours to appear at once. SwitchBot lists support for 16 million colours and for gradients, flowing effects and chasing patterns. Each LED produces up to 40 lm, for a total of up to 2,600 lm across the system; the company said that brightness figure comes from its own laboratory testing and may vary by lighting mode and conditions. White light is produced by dedicated warm- and cool-white LEDs rather than by mixing RGB, and colour temperature runs from 2700K to 6500K with dimming from 1% to 100% in the SwitchBot app.
Matter and controls
The lights support native Matter over Wi-Fi, so no additional SwitchBot Hub is needed, though SwitchBot notes that a Matter controller such as an Apple HomePod mini is still required. Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, SmartThings and other Matter ecosystems are listed as compatible. Users can control the system through the SwitchBot app, supported voice assistants or an included wired controller that offers physical switching and 10 brightness levels and works without Wi-Fi. A built-in microphone enables lighting that responds to sound, and a SwitchBot Remote is sold separately.
