Casio Computer Co., Ltd. said it will release a new MR-G timepiece, the MRG-B2100HR, adding to the G-SHOCK brand's flagship line of shock-resistant watches. The watch is a limited edition of 800 pieces worldwide, the company said.
The dial carries a dimensional latticework pattern inspired by kigumi, a traditional Japanese construction method and woodworking technique used to join wood without nails or metal fittings. Platinum leaf applied by metal leaf artist Hiroto Rakusho adorns each timepiece, and powdered platinum leaf is used to create depth, according to the release.
The design commemorates 30 years since MR-G debuted in 1996 and takes metal leaf as its source, with the theme of haruka, meaning eternity. Rakusho created an original artwork that, together with the timepiece design, is described in the release as bringing the world of haruka to life.
The new model is built on the shock-resistant MRG-B2100, which has an octagonal bezel. Its bezel and bracelet evoke Rakusho's artwork, with metal leaf-inspired textures rendered using structural color technology, a phenomenon in which iridescent colors appear on butterfly wings, minerals and other objects, achieved here with an ultrashort-pulse laser. Casio said precision laser processing produces colors that change with the viewing angle.
The bezel is formed from 27 components, each polished before assembly. It uses the super-hard alloy COBARION, and the bracelet uses DAT55G, which Casio said together deliver both metallic appearance and toughness.
