Tata Communications plans near-$450m India AI fibre build

Tata Communications plans to spend close to USD 450 million on about 10,000 km of long-haul fibre linking India's main AI and data centre corridors, starting with Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai.

10,000 km of new long-haul fibre

Tata Communications plans to build around 10,000 kilometres of new long-haul fibre across India, joining the country's main data centre and AI clusters into what it calls an AI super highway. The company said the planned investment is close to USD 450 million, within a range of USD 400 million to USD 450 million.

The network is to be integrated with the company's existing global backbone, which it says will give customers end-to-end links for AI workloads.

Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai first

The first phase covers the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor. Later phases are to extend into data centre ecosystems on the east coast and in western India, including Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and GIFT City, and other locations.

Tata Communications said the network will link these clusters to international cable landing stations. Alongside the new build, it said it will keep expanding its existing national long-distance and metro networks to serve current enterprise and data centre demand.

What the company says

Rupesh Chokshi, chief product and technology officer and global business head for network services, said the AI economy needs a network as much as it needs compute, and that speed, scale and resilience were the design goals. He said the fabric is intended to give customers fast, high-capacity and resilient links, and to connect India's AI and data centre hubs to global markets.
