
OneAsia, which builds and runs data centres across Asia, and OBON, a Bangkok artificial intelligence company, have announced a collaboration to build what they call Thailand's first 4K supercomputing clusters, using NVIDIA H100 servers to run a service named Siam AI Cloud.
The clusters will sit in OneAsia's BKK1 facility in northern Bangkok and use what the companies describe as a three-layer architecture delivering 16,000 petaflops of computing at eight-bit precision. The intended customers are government bodies and enterprises, with healthcare and education named as the first sectors.
A big number, and the base under it
Petaflops at reduced precision are the currency of AI infrastructure announcements, and they describe a ceiling rather than a service. What Thailand does not yet have is a large pool of organisations able to train frontier models, which is why the vendors point at public-sector workloads instead. OBON's chief executive, Ratanaphon Wongnapachant, puts the company's estimated investment in OneAsia at more than USD 300 million; the word estimated is doing real work, since the figure is a plan rather than a cheque.
Charles Lee, OneAsia's founder and chief executive, frames the project as the infrastructure the country's AI ambitions need. OneAsia has operated regional data centres since 2009, in Greater China, Singapore, Thailand, Japan and Korea, so it can supply the power and the floorspace; whether it can fill them is a different question.
The announcement gives no delivery timeline and no named customer, and the 16,000 petaflops is the companies' own figure. Supercomputing capacity is easy to announce and hard to sell, because the buyers are few and their budgets are annual. Thailand now has its first 4K supercomputing cluster on paper; whether it has one in use is what the next year will show.
