LG to Supply Integrated Cockpit Solution for Renault's First Commercial SDV

LG Electronics will supply its integrated cockpit solution for Renault Group's New Trafic E-Tech Electric, the company said. The vehicle is Renault Group's first mass-produced commercial vehicle built on a software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture, and it has won the International Van of the Year award.

The solution combines the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. The cluster presents driving information such as vehicle speed, revolutions per minute and warning indicators, while the infotainment system covers navigation and media playback, according to the company. LG said the arrangement lets driving and infotainment information appear in a consistent way across the vehicle's displays, and that it helps automakers lower costs by simplifying components and optimizing the system.

The company said the solution was designed for SDV environments. Such vehicles use high-performance computing and a centralized software architecture to control multiple functions that conventional vehicles split across dozens of electronic control units dedicated to areas including the cockpit, driver assistance and powertrain. They can also gain new features and upgrades through over-the-air software updates, the company said.

LG said its work draws on automotive infotainment development experience, software expertise and UX/UI capabilities from its mobile, television and home appliance businesses. Renault Group named LG an outstanding supplier in 2014, 2017 and 2020, and the two companies developed an Android-based automotive infotainment system together in 2021, according to the company.

Eun Seok-hyun, president of the LG Vehicle Solution Company, said the company would continue to advance the core technologies and solutions needed to support the mobility industry's move to SDVs. LG said it plans to expand its partnerships with major global automakers in North America, Asia and other key markets.
