A fifty-fifty Indian data centre venture, and the decade it has not priced

Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX have formed a joint venture to build data centres across India, starting with five cities.

Adani Enterprises, the flagship of the Adani Group, and EdgeConneX, a data centre operator that says it has 50 facilities across 30 markets, have formed AdaniConneX, an equally owned joint venture to develop and operate data centres across India. Development and construction have already started at five sites — Chennai, Navi Mumbai, Noida, Vizag and Hyderabad — according to the announcement.

The venture is described as building both full-scale data centres and a set of smaller edge sites, placed closer to where demand is, that are meant to grow into campuses as tenants arrive. The company says the platform will be largely powered by renewable energy.

What the announcement does not price

The release commits both partners to committing significant capital over the next decade and gives no figure. That is the number a reader wants, and the one that is missing. A joint venture of this shape is really a statement about which partner brings what. Adani brings land, green power, undersea cable landing stations and a spread of sites; EdgeConneX brings design, build and operations experience. Adani's chairman, Gautam Adani, called data centres a fundamental infrastructure need of a nation.

India's data centre market is genuinely under-supplied relative to its internet population, and the government has made capacity a policy priority. It is also a business where returns depend on anchor tenants signing long leases before the steel goes up, and where land and power are the easy parts.

A venture announced across five cities with no capital figure, no capacity target in megawatts and no schedule is best read as a framework, and judged later by how much of it is actually built. For now, a reader trying to weigh it has five city names, a partner list and no numbers at all.
