Razer has opened a new Southeast Asia headquarters in Singapore's one-north district, a building the company says will be home not only to its staff but to a RazerStore retail outlet and a RazerCafe with a robotic barista, which open to visitors from 28 October. The opening was officiated by Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister, Heng Swee Keat, whom the company says applauded its role in the gaming community locally and around the world.

Razer says it intends to grow its workforce in Singapore to 1,000 employees. Its co-founder and chief executive, Min-Liang Tan, described the hub as representing what the company stands for — innovation, design and sustainability — and as a place for its own staff, for entrepreneurs and for gamers.

What a headquarters is actually for

Corporate campus openings are usually read as property stories. They are more usefully read as labour-market ones. A gaming hardware company building a flagship office in Singapore is competing for the same engineers as the banks, platforms and chip firms around it, and a building with a store and a cafe is a recruitment tool as much as a workplace.

The sustainability framing — the company says the building met Singapore's Green Mark GoldPLUS standard under its environmental programme — is now standard in these announcements. It says less about a company's footprint than about what a large office is expected to demonstrate.

The hiring target is an intention rather than a result, and Razer does not say over what period the thousand jobs arrive. The part that can be checked is the building and the store. Whether the region's gaming industry grows the way the campus assumes is the question the opening cannot answer.
