Chinese AI start-up Moonshot AI released its Kimi K3 large language model ahead of the 2026 World AI Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance, according to the release. The release describes Kimi K3 as the world's largest open-source model by parameter count to date.
The release is the 27th installment of a Global Times series, "Decoding the Book Xi Jinping: The Governance of China," produced with the People's Daily Overseas Edition. It includes an interview with Francesco Faiola, an Italian professor at the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award.
Faiola said China's confidence in international scientific collaboration comes from a shift in mindset, and pointed to stem cell standards, AI efficiency and green manufacturing as evidence. He said his parents, who live in a small Italian town and barely use a smartphone, have called him about Chinese aircraft, humanoid robots and AI breakthroughs they saw on Italian television news. He cited the C919 airliner, DeepSeek and Unitree Robotics as showing that China can design and build original systems.
For China-Europe cooperation, Faiola proposed joint funding for integrated teams, harmonised regulations and ethics for organoid technologies, and joint PhD programmes that move students between continents. Asked about claims of a "China Shock 2.0," he said the idea does not match what he sees in his lab, and that lower-cost organoid platforms fill a shortage of hazard data rather than displacing existing demand.
