Behind the film
Malcolm Clarke, a two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker, is the writer and narrator of Shenzhen: People Who Build the Future, a documentary about the city, Shenzhen Media Group said in the release. The film is a collaboration between the media group and Clarke.
Seven people across generations
The documentary centres on seven individuals from different generations, according to the release. As the release describes them, they include early builders who laid the groundwork, technology developers working on supercars and robotics, international educators, and artists carrying Chinese culture abroad. Their personal journeys, the release says, define the city's pulse.
Past the skyline
Shenzhen Media Group said the film moves beyond familiar skylines and rapid economic growth to examine what it calls the city's true engine, its people. The release describes the documentary as capturing the resilience, grit and imagination of a place where, in its account, the future is built by hand.
