Infineon opens Bangkok backend plant, targets 1,000 staff

The German chipmaker has inaugurated a backend manufacturing site in Samut Prakan that starts with one module and can scale to five.

Infineon Technologies has inaugurated a backend manufacturing site in Bangkok, Samut Prakan, the company said, at an event attended by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Infineon chief operations officer Alexander Gorski.

The facility is built so it can scale to as many as five modules, and the company says Bangkok has the potential to become one of its largest backend manufacturing sites over time. It is described as complementing the ongoing expansion of Infineon's frontend manufacturing capacity.

The site employs around 350 people and is expected to reach approximately 1,000 employees as the first building, Module A, ramps up. It covers backend processes and wafer test, and the company says it works with universities, educational institutions and industry partners on talent development.

Infineon said the site runs on 100 percent green electricity, uses water recycling and rainwater collection, and has on-site solar modules. Further details are available on the company's Thailand location page, and the announcement itself can be read as issued.
