Dictionary.com said it added 5,900 words to its dictionary in this year's Summer Word Drop, in an announcement dated Sept. 15, 2026. The company said the additions cover vocabulary emerging from the places where people live, work, learn and connect.
Internet communities are creating new shorthand for how people interact online, the company said, while artificial intelligence is generating vocabulary for a technology that barely existed a decade ago.
The company said terms such as overprompt are moving out of niche technical conversations and into the mainstream. It said health, science and culture are among the areas reshaping English.
The announcement opened with an acronym spelled out as "if you know, you know," which the company said is among the words added.
