India receives Bangladesh's 'note verbale' on Sheikh Hasina's extradition request

New Delhi – India today confirmed that it has received a diplomatic note from the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi regarding Sheikh Hasina’s extradition request.

“We confirm that we have received a ‘note verbale’ from the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi today regarding a request for the extradition of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. At this time, we have no comment on the matter,” the ministry said Randhir Jaiswal said.

It is worth noting that under the provisions of the India-Bangladesh extradition treaty, extradition can be refused if the offense is of a “political nature”.

Another provision says a person convicted of an extradition offense may not be extradited unless the person is sentenced to four months or more in prison or other form of detention.

Relations between India and Bangladesh have been strained since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus came to power.

India has repeatedly expressed concern about attacks on ethnic minorities in Bangladesh, especially Hindus.
