Vietnam will start building a railway line from Haiphong, its largest port in the north, to the Chinese border by the end of this year, the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chih reportedly said in a statement on Sunday that the government will submit the project to the National Assembly for formal approval in February. Toitrea national news outlet.

The 417-kilometer (259-mile) railway line runs from Hai Phong city through the capital Hanoi to Lao Cai province, which borders China’s southern Yunnan province.

It is expected to be the first of two high-speed routes with China, Vietnam’s largest trading partner.

Officials from both countries have been discussing the rail link for some time, but the project’s success High-speed line through northern Laosand a similar line in China, which is believed to have convinced senior officials that they should do the same to boost trade and tourism.

China said in December it was ready to provide grants to Vietnam to strengthen railway construction between Kunming and the Vietnamese port city of Haiphong, as well as other transport links from southern China to Hanoi. Vietnamese national newspaper “Tuoi Tre” the report said.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport has been preparing a pre-feasibility report for the project, which may be part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, with Vietnam reportedly investing about $11 billion. Hanoi Times report October.

Ho Chi Minh City metro service launched

There has been a lot of news and enthusiasm recently about Vietnam’s railway lines, especially Ho Chi Minh City Metro LinesSunday at the South Commerce Center.

Residents are reportedly happy with the subway service, which is not surprising considering the city’s notoriously bad traffic conditions.

After 17 years of planning and 12 years of construction. Japan invested US$1.7 billion to build the Ho Chi Minh Metro Line, which has a total of 14 stations, including 3 underground stations and 11 above-ground stations.

Hanoi already has metro services and construction of a second metro line will begin next year.

In addition to the rail line to China, Hanoi also plans to upgrade its north-south line to Ho Chi Minh City.

The government said last month it would be a larger and more expensive project – 1,541 kilometers long and costing $67 billion.

The high-speed link from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City will be the country’s largest ever infrastructure project.

This is only possible because trade with China is booming and it seems Expected to exceed US$200 billion This year, that’s partly because U.S. and Chinese companies have moved production to northern Vietnam to avoid U.S. tariffs.
